4Youth (South West) run youth clubs for young people aged from 9 to 19 and operate detached youth work activities in a number of communities in West Wiltshire.

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed Assistant Youth Workers join our exciting team and help us to continue to improve and enhance our services.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and delivery of a programme of imaginative activities, encouraging the active participation of young people in developing their skills and understanding of others and the world around them.
  • Negotiate with young people and other staff members on their involvement in planning and organising activities for young people.
  • Assist in the provision of activities for young people that meet their needs.
  • Contribute to and promote the programme of activities to ensure that opportunities are accessible to all who wish to become involved.
  • Involve young people in the decision-making processes whereby individuals and groups take on responsibilities for themselves and others in their project and the wider community.
  • Respond to individual and group needs, which include issues affecting young people, promoting self awareness and self-esteem.
  • Facilitate young people’s learning and their personal and social development.
  • Take part in 4Youth (South West)’s staff performance management to identify priorities and learning needs and to be responsible for the learning and development of self.
  • Comply with individual responsibilities for staff and young people, in accordance with work role, for health and safety in the workplace.
  • Follow Child Protection Guidelines and report any concerns using the correct procedure.
  • Promote the organisation’s Equal Opportunity and Dignity at Work Policy.
  • In discharging the duties of the post to have due regard to the provisions of Health & Safety at Work legislation, as detailed in the Health and Safety Policy.
  • Undertake such additional responsibilities as required, which are commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post.

Person Specification


A qualification in youth or playwork, or the ability to undertake suitable youth work training (depending on number of hours contracted) within 12 months of the start of the contract.

First aid

Fire and health and safety training

Child Protection training

Proven Experience

Background in working with young people individually and in groups.

Experience of working with youth leaders and in centres

Experience of working with Public and Not-for-profit partners and contractors

Skills & Abilities

Organised in order to facilitate delivery of events and activities

Ability to relate well with hard-to-reach young people and understand their concerns

Creative thinker to provide ideas in order to develop a youth project according to local needs

Ability to deliver structured educational programmes to young people

Ability to network in order to promote the advantages of the youth club in the local area

Leadership Qualities

Able to set a positive example to service users

Able to encourage and support your colleagues

Committed to quality and improvement within your role and team

Committed to Innovation, Excellence and Ambition within your role

Personal Qualities
